My Story - Israr Khan

Israr Khan,
From Islamabad,
DOB : 04-08-1980,
Road Accident on 22-05-1998.

I belong to a village of Islamabad, I was working on a nearby place of my village where I was use to go on my bicycle. On 22nd May I was going back from my job, there a car hit my bicycle and I got injured badly and local people hurriedly took me to the nearby hospital in my village, but it was too late, I was already badly injured in my backbone which caused my SPINAL CORD Injury. I was there for one week, after that, those doctors did my MRI where they confirmed my spinal injury.

I am from a poor family; which feed themselves very difficult. So, I was unable to afford my treatment. So I shifted back to my home with the hope of soon recovery.

Right after the week of my discharge, I got bedsores and pressure-sores. My father was already a patient of Stroke. My brother was younger tthen me; he was unable to take care of me. So, I went to a day care center in Rawalpindi. There were many other patients regarding this Spinal cord injury and Stroke as well.  I am still in this day-care center from year 1998. Now this is my home. I often use to go my home (village) to meet with my family. I have urine infections every after some couple of weeks, and I also have some little bedsores but they are under healing process. I hope for the best for all you readers. And keep me in your kind prayers. :)

My Story - Malik Sohail Saqib

Malik Sohail Saqib,
From Rawalpindi,
DOB: 22-4-1972,
Swimming Pool incident on: May, 2000.

On the evening of May 2000, I was in Texila with my family and friends. We planned to take a swim in swimming pool so we  reached in swimming pool and took our place to jump on Pool; right on that time I jumped on a wrong place got hit on something inside the pool which broke my backbone. I felt on that time that my lower body is not with me. So my friends bring me out of the pool, and hurriedly took me to the nearest hospital (Texila hospital), in Texila Cantt. So doctors referred me to the Rawalpindi hospital.  They placed some rods and plates on my backbone to prevent more damage. And then discharged me from hospital after 2 weeks.
So I shifted home, and unluckily I got bedsores after 2 months, its was going deep and deep day-by-day, so I shifted in a nearby daycare center for bedsore care. I stayed there for 1 year almost. But this bedsore is still with me. its about 12 years that I still ave that one. its main reason is that: I was sited in wheelchair first time after 6 years. These problems are still with me because I have lack of knowledge about Spinal Cord Injury, nor any one guided to for my upcoming problems. I have these regular problems:

  • Urine problem, because I am using super-catheter
  • Bedsores – till now it is and is not healing.
I took super-catheter from the year 2001, till now I am dependent to this, and it irritates to too much. .What can we do now? It’s our last hope to manage our urinary system. But I still believe in Allah Almight that Insha’Allah one day He will make me self-dependent. My this brief introduction is because I want you all people to be-aware for these problems and please make your self attentive for this

Spinal Cord Injury | a way to pass life

My research on SCI patients of Pakistan

A majority of Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) can occurs due to any reason of incident such as: road accidents, falling from buildings, swimming accidents, sudden falling, suicide attacks, any explosion and natural disasters (earthquake, tsunami, flood, etc.) or many other reasons. The spinal-cord is the part of our brain which carries the information and signals to/from all the body parts. This thing makes the brain to make order to all body parts on our will, so if this spinal-cord breaks from the center then the brain is unable to receive and give the orders to the body parts. This condition makes the patient as paraplegic or quadriplegic. Spinal Cord Injury patients result in permanent disability and paralysis. Most of this paralysis may involve the loss of movement in the arms and legs, known as QUADRIPLEGIA, as well as and other parts of the body, mostly below the area of injury. A spinal cord injury, that affects the body's lower extremities from the stomach and legs is known as PARAPLEGIA.

A General overview on Pakistani SCI Patients
In Pakistan, the Spinal cord injury (SCI) patients are in thousands of numbers and the all are hopeless to get 100% recovery so that they can again able to walk on their own feet. In Pakistan, the patients of SCI increased up to 600 patients at the same time, due to an earthquake of October 8, 2005., which is the highest number ever reported in any disaster in the whole world. But this is the only figure of that disaster, but in whole there are thousands of patients in Pakistan who are affected to this type of injury. Some patients belong to villages and some from cites also. But in general figure round about 83% didn’t get well medical cure and the rest only 17% patients got available cure.

The male-to-female ratio is approximately 1:3 (26% : 74%). The majority 78% are 16 to 39 years of age. If we discuss these figures as level vise into the Pakistani patients then it shows as figures like: 62% had lumbar-level injuries, -- 25% had thoracic-level injuries, -- 9% had lumbar-level injuries, and a few had sacral-level injuries. All patients developed urinary tract infections; 15% had bowel complaints; 2% developed deep-vein thrombosis and 0.05% developed wound infections. Following are the some complications which the patient of SCI usually complains and its percentage w.r.t all SCI patients:

This should be clear that these figures are from the patients of Sindh, Punjab, KPK, Baluchistan, Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir.

Seeks Attention
Awareness of potential complications in patients with paraplegia is essential to care planning in Pakistan. The priorities include skin, bowel, and bladder care and provision of prophylactic heparin. SCI patients require comprehensive long-term planning from the government side so that they could also pass there life in the normal way so that the nation could also utilizes their talent and God-Gifted potential.

  •  Only 3 proper rehabilitation centers are at present working in Pakistan: 1 is in Rawalpindi namely AFIRM (Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, 1 in Peshawar, and the other 1 is in Islamabad namely NIRM (National Institute of Rehabilitation and Medicine), are playing and important role to make these people mobilized and to help them to pass there life in a well-mannered way. Like these center, in all the cities and towns of Pakistan there should be such type of centers which can help the patients of SCI to improve the living standard and able to play there their part in the progress and prosperous of their beloved country Pakistan.
  • The Patients are scattered to all over the country and there should be a government recognize office there all patients must be registered in daily basis so that government could easily facilitate them with the basis heath facilities and make them able to play their role in the country’s progress and so that they could improve the living standard.
  • The patients from the villages and towns even don’t know the levels of there injuries and its precautions, so that they could be alert for their future living standard. There should be such form of physicians who can guide them and make them alert from many long-term medical problems this thing mostly makes the patient’s current condition to its worst end. If they have its knowledge then at least they can reduce the chances of kidney failure, bladder condition, pressure sores and many more things.
  • All citizens of Pakistan must know the growing rate of SCI injuries patients so that they could aware to the patient’s medical structure and help them morally to place them in first. This act can also make awareness to avoid the reasons of SCI do that it could reduce the number of patient annually. That was the simple go through about the Spinal Cord Injury patients. Keep them in your kind prayers.

My Story - Ammar Khan

Ammar Khan,
From: Islamabad.
DOB is 12th October, 1988.
Paralyzed T8, T9,
Complete injury,
Accident on 22 December, 2009.

I passed my recent years in studies, right after completing my college studies i got this crucial accident on December 2009, so due to which i got fractured my backbone and got complete spinal cord injury at level T8, T9. I got surgical procedure in which surgeon fixed rods and screws to prevent more damage in spinal cord. I was admitted in hospital for couple of weeks and then shifted home after stable condition. It is like, I didn't got any recovery till now, and I cannot feel or move my lover body from my abdomen to feet. Nor I have any kind of bedsore or any other infections. Yes it happens once after couple of months as infections in bladder or kidney. I am using air mattress to prevent bed sores. This whole was much tough in starting days but now I'm use to it.

I am having regular physiotherapy at morning time, I also use to stand up in standing frame for at-least half an hour. I have to do there exercises at daily basis because if I skip this then I have to face too much spasm in my both legs which causes backache. Even now, I don't have any kind of physical improvement. I am bound on wheelchair. I had joined a university last year where I am completing my studies also, I am doing BS-CS, its 4 years program. My injury never stopped me to behave like a normal guy, may be its because I have high moral and willpower.

You can go through to this my video for more information.
